Walking the streets of downtown Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas is like walking back in time. Many buildings remnants remain of this 400 year old trade center. And no structure in St. Thomas best exemplifies St. Thomas’ rich history like Frederick Lutheran Church.
Imagine saying your “I dos” within the walls of a 200 year-old church with roots dating back to 1666. Frederick Lutheran Church was established by the Danish crown as the first church in the Danish West Indies.
As a wedding venue, none invokes the history of St. Thomas like this church. With steps rising from the main thoroughfare in Charlotte Amalie, it stands proudly over the downtown district.
Imagine an afternoon wedding with the bluest skies and bright clouds above and the trade winds blowing through the church as you and your family celebrate your wedding.
The interior of the church is classic Caribbean. Creaky old mahogany pews and massive mahogany altar, simple decor, upstairs seating and big open windows.
A really interesting touch are the tombstones and memorials of notable church members and pastors cemented into the interior of the church.
The grounds of the church include additional structures that date back hundreds of years and there are a few small, but lovely gardens for pictures.
Because it is located in downtown Charlotte Amalie, parking is limited at the church, instead there is a parking lot near Fort Christian – about a 5 minute walk.
You do not need to be a member of the Lutheran church to have your wedding here. But there is pre-marital counseling required with the pastor on island or a certified letter from a pastor in the States.
A site fee of $450 is required and you must be married by the pastor here in St. Thomas.
Weddings aren’t performed during holy week and must be outside of regular service hours.
